There is much confusion in Christendom concerning the right and proper use of the Mosaic law. Some believe that the moral laws are applicable to Christians; others, that none of it applies. A small minority hold that all of it must be observed. The law came in so that offences might abound (Rom. 5:20); it addresses itself to the flesh and thoroughly condemns it. What the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God has done another way. No longer are we pursing our own righteous standing before God. We are freely justified by His grace and we stand before God where Christ stands. We have a new life in Christ, and we are to live in the good of that life in the power of the Holy Spirit. Our object is no longer self but Christ. Whereas the law said "do and live;" grace has given us life that we may live and do.

“Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by Him [the Lord Jesus]: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead…and Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see Him” (Luke 9:7,9).

The Herod family, started by Herod the Great, were really not Jews at all. They were Edomites, descended from the family of Esau. However, they managed to gain favor with the authorities in Rome, and thus had political power over certain parts of the land of Israel.

Sadly, while Herod had built a magnificent temple for the Jews, it does not seem that any of the family had real faith. The Herod mentioned in our verses today was the son of Herod the Great, and his desire to see the Lord Jesus was only because of curiosity. Later, the Lord Jesus referred to him as “that fox” (Luke 13:32), and when Pilate sent the Lord Jesus to him, Herod mocked and humiliated Him, and as part of the shame, put on Him a gorgeous robe.

How sad it is to have only a natural curiosity about the Lord Jesus, and not to have any real interest in being saved!

Growing in Grace
“Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus” (John 18:10).
“And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And He touched his ear, and healed him” (Luke 22:51).
Here is another story about an ear that is worth noticing. The high priest and the Pharisees had sent a band of men to arrest the Lord Jesus, and Judas, who was one of the Lord’s disciples, had betrayed his Master. For a sum of money he had promised to lead the soldiers to where he knew the Lord Jesus would be.
When the soldiers came, Peter was ready to defend his Master. He had a sword, and he used it on a servant of the high priest. He ended up by cutting off his right ear, but Peter was probably aiming for more than the ear! He was likely aiming for his head, but since the man probably ducked, the sword cut off only his ear. The Bible even tells us the man’s name — Malchus. Why does it give us these details?
I believe it is because there is a moral lesson for us here. We may not cut off someone’s ear with a sword or a knife, but if we treat people roughly or use harsh language with them, there are not likely to listen to the gospel afterward. We have, in that sense, cut off their ear. It is easy to do this when someone treats us badly. In this case the servant of the high priest was coming to arrest the Lord Jesus and Peter felt that he should fight these bad men. But he did not realize that it was all in God’s plan, and that he should not resist.
Notice how the Lord Jesus handled the situation. He told Peter to stop, but then healed the servant’s ear. What wonderful grace! I am sure that Malchus never forgot it. Whether he ever got saved we do not know, for we never hear of him again in the Bible. But the Lord Jesus had showed him love and grace, even when he was coming to do harm to Him. Surely all this would have made him ready to listen to the gospel.

Daily Light
As the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself. (John 5:26)
Our Savior Jesus Christ, … hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.1 – I am the resurrection, and the life.2 – Because I live, ye shall live also.3 – We are made partakers of Christ.4 – Partakers of the Holy Ghost.5 – Partakers of the divine nature.6 – The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.7 – Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.8
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. … who liveth forever and ever.9 – The blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; who only hath immortality.10 – Unto the King eternal, immortal, … be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.11

Comfort of the Scriptures
“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and He delighteth in his way” (Psa. 37:23).
The Bible often calls the Christian’s daily pilgrimage a “walk,” and we are told to “walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God,” and “if we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” When we walk, we take one step at a time. Our days are made up of “steps,” one by one, and “the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord.” He delights to guide our steps, as we look to Him. And He does so by His Word. “Order my steps in Thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me,” and “hold up my goings in Thy paths, that my footsteps slip not.” It is written that when “the law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.” Thus “righteousness shall go before Him; and shall set us in the way of His steps.” Let us walk each step in humble dependence upon the Lord, praying Him to “show me Thy ways, O Lord; teach me Thy paths,” knowing that “all the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth unto such as keep His covenant and His testimonies” and that “Thou wilt show me the path of life.” By His Word He shows us the right paths and steps for us, for “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
The Lord leads us a step at a time,
As we look to Him through the Word;
Step by step, day by day, He guideth,
Until we are home with the Lord.
